Today we join Team Wild’s Steve Wild on a fallow deer management cull in Lincolnshire. Previously on Team Wild TV, we joined Ian Harford stalking roebuck in Hampshire.
Deer management is about getting the balance right between establishing a strong and healthy herd of deer, whilst protecting the forestry and farming interests of the landowner. Effective deer management produces bigger deer and happy landowners.
The deer concession is home to a strong population of fallow deer. The dense woodland makes stalking here a very challenging prospect. Fallow deer have been native to the UK for over 1,000 years.
Steve begins the day scouting in a highseat surrounded by the stunning wilderness of Lincolnshire. The highly advanced Realtree Max-5 is designed for active hunters in a multitude of environments. Whether Steve is in a highseat or stalking. Realtree camo works perfectly in the subdued colours of winter. With layers of detail and shadowing to add depth.
It isn’t long until a group of fallow does are a short distance from Steve’s highseat. He sets his Blaser R8 Professional Success and patiently waits for the right moment for a safe shot to be presented. Steve doesn’t waste an opportunity and is successful in harvesting his first fallow doe of the day.
Following the success in the highseat Steve heads out woodland stalking. Deer stalking or stalking game as a whole is not a skill that can be learned overnight. It takes plenty of time and self determination in the field and out in the woods. Steve has spent many years learning the art of stalking and it isn’t too long before Steve finds a large gathering of fallow does.
As the day goes on more success comes to Steve, as he is able to several more does, bringing his total to nine.
Fallow deer populations require careful management to maintain health and quality to ensure a sustainable balance with their environment.
