Born in Southern France, Team Wild expert Pierre-Jean Lacombe dedicates his time to stalking and hunting animals on his vast estate. With good numbers around and plenty of medal bucks wandering in the woods, Pierre and his family now have the opportunity to harvest some great animals. Not to mention the stags! Pierre and his family now take 16 or 18 massive pointers during the rut each season, so who better to inform you about the importance of pre- season scouting in preparation for a successful roe deer hunting season than Pierre himself?
As everyone knows roe deer are territorial animals. During the winter they gather in herds and seem to enjoy one another’s company. However, the arrival of the warmer summer days sees the males ascertain the best territory available as possible.
The bucks segregate themselves from other males, except from the young. This is a good time to observe them to learn where the good bucks will spend the next few months. If you succeed in doing this it will then save you a lot of time during the season.
During April and May, all the mature bucks will be clearly settled into their area and will protect it from other males by marking their territory and chasing away undesirable roe deer.
When the season starts I know most of the bucks on my estate (I say most because it’s clearly impossible to know them all), therefore I am able to take my clients to the right areas. Of course then it’s all a matter of the weather and habits, that’s what always makes our hunts so different.
My final word will be to spend as much time as possible out scouting before the season. Just because it’s a great time to be out with just a pair of binoculars, with no pressure and only the delight of watching nature during the spring.
